Sudarshan Kriya Yoga Helps People With Depression – Study Shows

– There are many documented benefits of practicing yoga.

Scientists have discovered that Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) is highly beneficial for people who suffer from depression.

Sudarshan Kriya which is a Sanskrit term meaning “proper vision by purifying action” is an intense rhythmic breathing pattern that helps to reduce stress, strengthens the immune system, reduces cholesterol levels, increases energy and improves well-being and health in general.

In America alone, there are 41 million people who use antidepressants (depression medications). More than half of these people do not fully respond. Add-on therapies are often prescribed to enhance the effects of the drugs in these patients, but they typically offer limited additional benefits and come with side effects that can curb use, prolonging the depressive episode. What’s more, patients who don’t fully respond to antidepressants are especially at risk of relapse.

Researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have examined how the use of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga can help battle depression. The results of the study are very promising.

There was a significant improvement in symptoms of depression and anxiety in medicated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who participated in the breathing technique compared to medicated patients who did not partake.

“With such a large portion of patients who do not fully respond to antidepressants, it’s important we find new avenues that work best for each person to beat their depression. Here, we have a promising, lower-cost therapy that could potentially serve as an effective, non-drug approach for patients battling this disease,” Anup Sharma, MD, PhD, a Neuropsychiatry research fellow in the department of Psychiatry at Penn said.

The meditation technique, which is practiced in both a group setting and at home, includes a series of sequential, rhythm-specific breathing exercises that bring people into a deep, restful, and meditative state: slow and calm breaths alternated with fast and stimulating breaths.

“Sudarshan Kriya Yoga gives people an active method to experience a deep meditative state that’s easy to learn and incorporate in diverse settings,” Sharma said.

Yoga, an ancient Indian science has been recognized in the West and researchers have on several occasions observed that traditional yoga practices improve mental health. Yoga has been adopted as an approach to health within alternative medicine. SKY relieves stress and develops an individual’s mind–body–spirit so that they can be happier, healthier, and possibly even longer lived

Sudarshan Kriya Yoga has been taught by the Art of Living Foundation to more than 6 million people in 152 countries worldwide.

There are no known Sudarshan Kriya side effects.
