The note, written by Guy Hottel – special agent in charge of the Washington field office in 1950 – claimed: “Three socalled flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico.”

Hottel added: “They were described as being circular in shape with raised centres and approximately 50ft in diameter.

“Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3ft tall.”

The aliens were described as “dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture”.

Hottel claims to have been given the information by an Air Force investigator, whose identify was censored in the memo.

He says the informant claimed the saucers had been forced to land in New Mexico because the high-powered radar set-up in that area had affected the craft’s controls. The release of the secret memo is likely to fuel claims of a government cover-up of the Roswell incident.

The town became infamous after reports that a flying saucer had crashed at a nearby military base in July 1947.

The US military are rumoured to have recovered bodies of aliens from the scene and carried out post-mortems.

At the time, the authorities issued a press release which confirmed the capture of a “flying disc”.

But the military soon backtracked and claimed the object they had retrieved was a weather balloon that had crashed on a nearby ranch.
