OUT OF THIS WORLD Stunning Jupiter ‘mega-storm’ caught on camera by Nasa spacecraft

NASA’S Image of the Day is usually awe-inspiring but this snap of a storm swirling on Jupiter’s surface is on another level.

The beautiful photo was taken by Nasa’s Juno spacecraft and looks more like a surrealist painting than a planet after enhancements brought it to life.

The Juno spacecraft managed to take the photo back in 2018.

Nasa said: “A multitude of swirling clouds in Jupiter’s dynamic North North Temperate Belt is captured in this image from NASA’s Juno spacecraft.

“Appearing in the scene are several bright-white “pop-up” clouds as well as an anticyclonic storm, known as a white oval.

“This colour-enhanced image was taken at 4:58 p.m. EDT on Oct. 29, 2018, as the spacecraft performed its 16th close flyby of Jupiter.”

The space agency added: “At the time, Juno was about 4,400 miles from the planet’s cloud tops, at a latitude of approximately 40 degrees north.

“Citizen scientists Gerald Eichstädt and Seán Doran created this image using data from the spacecraft’s JunoCam imager.”

Juno has been in Jupiter’s orbit since July 2016.

It took five years for the spacecraft to finally reach this destination.

Juno is exploring Jupiter’s atmosphere as well as trying to learn more about its giant gravitational and magnetic fields.

Nasa hopes to find out what Jupiter is made of and how much of the planet it water.
